With the challenges of the pandemic still with us, we’re all trying to find ways to be safe while staying connected. The good news is that these days, finding virtual kinship with others is easier than ever. Volunteering, taking part in hobbies together, and working toward career advances are just a few of the things waiting for you when you look in the right places. We suggest taking a look at these three ways to make meaningful connections with others from home.

1. Charitable causes and volunteer organizations

Do you care most about raising money for children’s hospitals, finding a cure for a disease, or homeless shelters? How about working to help animal sanctuaries or environmental groups? No matter what your passion is, there is sure to be an online community of like-minded, kind-hearted people who also want to do good in the world. You can find many independent groups started by nonprofits that allow you to volunteer and connect with others through regular Zoom calls and email lists. There are also plenty of grassroots movements started on social media sites that give group members actions to take, including petitions, outdoor socially-distanced events, or online fundraisers to aid the causes you’re excited to support.

2. Hobbies

Joining a group on social media dedicated to an activity you enjoy can be a great way to meet new people, and can help you learn tips and tricks! Especially if your hobby is an indoor pursuit, video calls can give you a nice way to spend a quiet evening at home while enjoying the companionship of another person who likes the same things you do. This type of friendly virtual meetup lends itself particularly well to arts and crafts, learning a new language, cooking, and other activities that may seem solitary, but are even more fun together.

3. Career

Online groups on social media or messaging platforms that focus on your industry can be a fantastic way to network and make new friends. Hearing others’ stories of challenges and triumphs can show you that no matter what’s happening in your current job situation, you’re not alone. Some groups even offer mentoring programs, and if they don’t, you can always start one! Finding a mentor can provide both job growth and companionship. You may even end up with a surprise offer for your dream job! If you are the one in a position to help others, become a mentor instead. It is always rewarding and feels great to pass on valuable knowledge and advice to those who could use it.

Whichever way you decide to go, you’re certain to find like-minded people who share your interests and can see you through difficult times. Getting to know people who are just like you can be a wonderful way to rid yourself of feelings of loneliness and replace them with inspiration and camaraderie.
